Carma 2013 Carménère

Estate Bottled Colchagua Valley Reserva

Varieties: 85% Carménère, 15% Malbec
Appellation: Colchagua Valley Reserva
Alcohol: 13.5 %

For the 2013 vintage we proudly return to the same estate vineyard as used for our premiere release from 2007, located in the Colchagua Valley - which is essentially Chile’s version of Napa. The focus in the Colchagua is given to Bordeaux varieties introduced in the late 19th century before Europe’s phylloxera crisis, and these reds yield excellent and always very concentrated wines, with red fruit focus and ripe tannins. The valley’s hot climate makes it a natural for producing powerful reds.

The soils are deep clay based with excellent drainage, and vines are 15 years old, yielding approximately 12 tons per hectare.

A slow and cool growing season in 2013 made for sophisticated, aromatic wines; late-ripening varieties like Carménère benefited the most, with some winemakers picking three weeks later than normal, even with this last variety to be customarily harvested. It will be remembered as one of the coolest vintages in the past decade, with some winemakers calling it downright cold. The late-ripening reds developed into elegant wines with lower alcohol levels, fresh acidity and light tannins - a good year for Carménère, indeed.

  • PRODUCTION: 2,800 cases
  • HARVEST: Hand-picked on May 18th (the Malbec over a month earlier, April 14th)
  • BARREL AGEING: 70% stainless steel, 30% in used barrels for 6 months.

Winemaker’s Notes:

The two varieties were vinified separately and each passed through a hand-selection table process before being cold soaked prior to fermentation, which occured at 27-28°C.  After fermentation the wine was left to soak more, until regular tastings determined that the wine was ready to be transferred for malolactic fermentation; and then a percentage further transferred to used barrels for ageing.

The color is anintense red with violet hues. Aromas offer a lively mix of fresh fruit and spice, especially ripe red fruits and subtle white pepper. This wine is round and smooth with a subtle lingering spiciness that compliments the refreshing, red fruit character.  The finish is long and the tannins are soft.
